U-BOAT CYLINDRICAL CALCULATING SLIDE RULE: DENNERT & PAPE
Marine altitude slide rule or manual altitude slide rule.
Used on the German U-Boats with the celestial globe for accurate location determination at sea.
In the second image you see a commander holding the cylinder and making his calculations with his dividers.
It was used to calculate the altitude and azimuth of celestial bodies ( sun, moon, stars, planets)
This example with serial number 87174 was manufactured on October 20, 1943 by Dennert and Pape.
The instrument consists of three concentric cylinders.
The instrument comes with the original cylindrical metal carrying case and a pine transport crate.
At the bottom of the middle cylinder are instructions for using the instrument, including a white notepad where the user can make small notes with a pencil.
Condition:
The instrument is undamaged, free of cracks or discoloration.
The instrument is in mint condition!
The cylinders are made of aluminum covered with varnished paper, tables, diagrams and square rules.
The ends, and the knob are made of Bakelite and plexiglass, and are undamaged.
Only the metal transport case is missing a few small pieces of paint.
This is one of the Kriegsmarine's most intriguing instruments.
A rare rarity, only a handful of these calculating slide rules have survived.
