19TH CENTURY BRASS SANDGLASS
Wall sandglass mounted on oval brass background (42 cm. / 12’’), with decorations depicting Father Time, cloaked in a loin cloth like the Greek god Kronos.
The wings of the old man point to ‘tempus fugit’: the passing of time, while the shortness of life is represented by the scythe that cuts off time.
The hourglass is surrounded by a wreath of grape leaves.
The sandglass itself in which the sand keeps running away can of course be turned round time and again.
A new time period: all begins again. It is indeed an hourglass brimming with symbolism.
Large sandglass (17 cm. / 6’’) filled with fine ground orange marble.
Running time: 30 mins.
