SEXTANT T.L. AINSLEY SOUTH SHIELDS 19TH CENTURY
Elegant sextant executed in a bell pattern of polished brass.
Signed on the degree arc: made for L.T. Ainsley, South Shields.
Scale of 0 up to 155 º degrees, with magnifying glass and vernier to 10 seconds.
The sextant has been carried out with many attachments: four coloured sun glasses, three horizon glasses.
On the index arm as a basis an adjustable and extending telescope.
As an accessory three extra telescopes, two eye caps, and a wrench for the mirror.
Very fancy mahogany-wooden travelling box with a lot of brass fitting and a separate clasp, little ivory plate: ‘The patent Hezzanith sextant’.
The instrument has been issued with several patents.
The sextant fits in the travelling box with a patented clasping system; the lock is opened by an ingenious box white press-button release system.
The Kew test certificate indicates zero errors, with the special mirror key the instrument can be adjusted without deviations.
By means of the patented mirror system the mirror can be adjusted to all sides.
Test Certificate National Physical laboratory present.
High quality and complete implementation.
T.L. Ainsley worked from several locations between 1858-1886.
This early bell frame sextant has a higher quality then the later types.
Presumably this is one of the first bell frame models of its type which have been made for the retail trade.
Later models had a black oxidised brass frame.

OCTANT IN MAHOGANYWOOD CHEST CA 1840
Very refined ebony wood octant by the Spencer-Browning & Co. of London firm.
Nice execution with various coloured horizon glasses and prism viewers.
Angle measurement up to 90 degrees, protractor and vernier out of ivory, vernier reading up to 20 seconds.
Complete with separate eye cap to be used with the prism viewers, and adjusting pin for the mirror.
In the chest a trade vignette by Rotterdam retailers G.W. Peter & Zoon.
Beautiful original chest with a lot of patina.
Length including pedestal 27 cm. (10,5 inches)

LARGE HADLEY' S QUADRANT, Signed G. Heath Ca. 1850
A large mid 19th century octant.
The octant is made by the English manufacturer G. Heath of London.
Ivory scale division from 0 to 90 degrees.
The octant has two small and one large mirror with various bilge glasses.
Frame length is an impressive 46 cm. with nicely decorated index arm with a supporting ivory scale division.
On the index arm there are recognizable engravings that were common in times of war, like banners, drums and a halberd.
Nice big instrument complete with bone table at the back and matching pencil in ivory cover. Big stepped oak case in shape of a quarter circle.
