S-BOAT COMPASS WW II C. PLATZ HAMBURG
Navy compass made by Carl Platz of Hamburg.
This compass served on one of the German ‘schnellboote’.
In the 40’s the main working areas of the S-boats were the Baltic, the North Sea, the Channel and the Mediterranean.
Because the boats, due to high speeds, used to smash into the water a lot and had a lot to endure, this type of compass was developed for the S-boats.
This compass, filled-in with fluid, keeps the compass chart very stable and still.
It is designed in such a way, that everyone in the central cockpit could watch the compass, regardless of where one stood.
The big glass dome with brass knob is beautifully decorated. A real eye-catcher.
A nice collector’s item to place next to the GPS.
Suitable for installation in a sloop, motorboat or yacht; possibilities for installation in consoles and tables.
Signed on the edge with the Platz logo: the sun-shooter, a little swastika, and the M (Kriegsmarine).
Diameter of the compass dome plus edge is ca 35 cm. The compass is free from air bubbles.
Age ca 70 years.
High quality.
