Elegant small yachting compass in the shape of a mushroom.
Equipped with burners with nicely decorated chimneys.
The compass has an ultra light Thomson rose made from Japanese paper.
Signed C. Johansson Altona with logo depicting an owl.
The mounting points in the elegant column are in the shape of small crayfish.
Total height: 110 cm. (43 inches)

DUTCH DRY COMPASS CA. 1780
Dutch compass signed: Willem Schaap in Amsterdam.
A little cade from rolled fruitwood with a fancy dry card with small cartouche in the middle
depicting a sheep.
Names of the wind directions in old Dutch writing.
Willem Schaap and his son Tjerk, blacksmiths and compass makers by trade, were active at
barge nr 5 in the heart of the port of Amsterdam in the 18th century.
The compass is in exceptional condition and works properly.
Height: 8 cm.

DUTCH DRY COMPASS SPAARNDAM 17TH CENTURY
An early Dutch compass from the last part of the 17th century, ca.1680.
The compass bowl has been made of wood and has been mounted in an oak case.
The travelling box construction has been made with dent connections and long tenons.
The brass gimbals have been hand-made on the anvil and sounded with rivets.
The compass can be taken simply from its gimbals to be used as a table compass.
The dry card is in beautiful and smooth condition with Dutch-language denotation of the wind directions.
The card has been signed by H. Besançon from Spaarndam.
A compass with a completely pure character; original and in unrestored state and still in proper working order.
Dimension crate 19 cm x 19 cm x 13 cm (7.5 x 7.5 x 5 inches)
Besançon came to the religion-tolerant Netherlands in the 17th century, along with the stream of Protestant Huguenotes, to establish himself as an émigré.
