Prawn Fishing On Mother Of Pearl Late 18th Century

These engraved shells belong to the ‘Pintudo Maxima’ and hail from the waters of Guinee and Northern Australia.
They are also called: golden lip shell.
Engraved shell pictures have been known to exist since 1597.
Usually they are nautical pictureds but religious themes were also used.
These shells were made in France, in Normandy and on the Brittany coast, with Dieppe as the main centre.
On it local fishermen were often depicted in the traditional costume of late 18th century, ca. 1790.
The two shells in these pictures show two prawn fishermen at the white chalk rocks of Normandy.
Nice flawless condition, height 14 cm., breadth 13 cm.

Maritime Portrait On Mother Of Pearl Ca. 1820

Maritime portrait cut from the pearl shell of the Pintudo Maxima (golden lip shell).
The person shown here is an anonymus  navy officer.
He is dressed in the traditional navy uniform with the high
collar and navy hat adorned with ostrich feathers.

Shell With Pipe Smoking Sailor Pierre-Adrien Graillon 1807 – 1872

Pierra Graillon was the maker of small terra cotta sculptures and statuette groups,
as well as artist, woodcutter and ivory artist. 
It’s put under a big antique bell jar.

Pipe Smoking Brittany Fisherman Pierre-Adrien Graillon 1807 – 1872.

A friendly looking Brittany fisherman with traditional cap.
The sculptures by Pierre-Adrien Graillon were always very expressive and true-to-nature.
The local fashion, traditional costumes and the typical half sideburns of the 19th century fishermen are clearly visible in this terra cotta statuette.
Height ca. 15 cm.
