In the years before the 1st and 2nd World Wars Carl Zeiss was the biggest market leader and provider
of optics in Europe and beyond.
All Japanese naval officers used Carl Zeiss optics in the 1881-1914 period.
However, after the 1st World War it became next to impossible to import optics from Germany so the
decision was made to manufacture them themselves for their own expansion purposes.
And so it happened to be the Fuji brothers that started producing the first Japanese models.
The development and production of high performance optics was seen by the Japanese as a huge boon in military operations.
Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) was market leader and produced these highly valued optics until the 1950’s.
