IVORY COMPASS – MADE BY GILBERT
SKU: 96

VERY FINE IVORY TRAVEL COMPASS – MADE BY GILBERT

A very rare compass in ivory box with screw lid.
Made in London by Gilbert at the end of the 18th century.
Paper compass chart with mica at the bottom, sealing wax for balancing and a removable compass pen.
In the compass there is an ivory ring that lessens the effects of
strong movements, and nicely stabilizes the chart.
The earliest compasses were made from brass or wood, this compass was made
form exclusive ivory, which is quite rare.
A veritable gentlemen’s accessory, very well preserved and still working as it should.
The compass is in absolute mint condition without wear and tear!
A lovely museum piece that would of course also not be out of place in a private collection.
Size 4 x 6.4 cm. (1½ x 2½ inches)
