DUTCH DRY COMPASS IN CHEST 19TH CENTURY
Dutch dry compass, gimballed suspension in wooden chest with swallow tail connection.
Made and signed by compass maker F. Smeding of Enkhuizen.
Mr. Smeding had a shop in fisherman’s and shipping supplies in the former South Sea village
of Enkhuizen in the 19th century.
The compass rose is very pretty and above all very smooth.
It is made from paper with Dutch abbreviations of the wind directions.
The compass is in fine working order.
