19TH CENTURY WALKING STICK FROM WHALE BONE
Exquisite gentleman’s walking stick from ivory and whale bone.
The knob and the upper part are made from walrus ivory and finished with silver frames.
The lower part consists of whale bone in which big and small diamond shapes are cut that flow nicely into a spiral shape.
In the ivory knob a strip is very skilfully cut out in the shape of a Turkish head band
design..

Signed Maritime Whaler’s Walking Stick
Made and signed by John Hardman & Co, Birmingham ca. 1850 – 1920.
The walking stick is provided with the silver stamps of England, Birmingham, The year letter and signature John Hardman & Co.
Partly from polished bamboo and a grip formed as a sperm whale made from Indian ebony wood.
Beautifully decorated walking sticks have long been popular as collectors items.
The walking stick not only supported the body, but often also people’s vanity.
Renowned gentlemen flaunted their prosperity by having expensive walking sticks made.
During shore leave they were important status symbols for a captain or a ship-owner, and a side phenomenon of 19th century fashion.

Mid 19th Century Scrimshaw Walking Stick From Whale Bone
A quite distinctive and nicely shaped walking stick cut from a massive whale bone.
The first part of the walking stick has been cut out in a very nice spiral shape, that resembles a twisted narwhal tusk.
The handle is a massive ivory knob shaped like a globe with carved gores and the equator.
Excellent quality, very special walking stick.
